The Weeknd is headed to the Super Bowl.
The Canadian superstar will headline the 2021 halftime show at Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Fla., on Feb. 7, it was announced today.
“We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl, and one can only dream of being in that position,” The Weeknd said in a statement. “I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.”
It will be the second Super Bowl halftime show produced in part by JAY-Z and Roc Nation. “The Weeknd has introduced a sound all his own,” said JAY-Z. “His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry.”
The pandemic will have an impact on next year’s Super Bowl. Last month, the NFL said it was likely that only about 20 percent of the seats at Raymond James Stadium would be filled.
In March, The Weeknd released his chart-topping album After Hours, which spawned the No. 1 hits “Blinding Lights” and “Heartless.” He is already working on another project that could arrive once quarantine is over.
The Weeknd joins recent Super Bowl halftime performers including Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5 and Travis Scott, and Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who headlined last year’s show.
