Fresh off delivering an NBA championship to the city of Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokounmpo is staking claim to another Milwaukee sports franchise. Antetokounmpo has purchased a stake in the Milwaukee Brewers, the MLB team announced Friday.
Antetokounmpo is following in the footsteps of Patrick Mahomes in becoming small-market stars investing in the local baseball franchise, which Mahomes did in joining the Kansas City Royals’ ownership group last year.
“Man, this is unbelievable,” Antetokounmpo, wearing a No. 34 baseball jersey, said at Friday’s news conference. “This is a dream come true for a kid from Sepolia, Athens, Greece, born from immigrant parents. I could have never imagined I would be in this position.”
Per Joe Pompliano of the Huddle Up newsletter, the Brewers are valued at roughly $1.2 billion. The team has appreciated 225 percent over the past 10 years.
Antetokounmpo’s purchase further cements his roots in Milwaukee. He notably signed a five-year, $228 million supermax extension with the Bucks last December.
