Nike & Serena Williams Release First Collection From SWDC

Nike & Serena Williams Release First Collection From SWDC

[ad_1]

In 2019, Nike and Serena Williams teamed for the Serena Williams Design Crew, a design apprenticeship program at Nike created to promote diversity in design and establish a new generation of design talent at Nike and beyond.

Turning around in 2020 and Nike brought the first SWDC to Nike’s World Headquarters for six months of creating a Serena-inspired collection that included footwear, apparel, accessories, and more for women’s performance and lifestyle products.

Nike now introduces the first SWDC collection, which seamlessly connects sport and culture while drawing upon 90s nostalgia. The collection explores Serena’s lineage and legacy through her past and present — as well as the future she’s influencing and reflects Nike’s approach to encoding deep meaning into the products it creates for athletes* – meaning every design decision, down to the smallest details, was made with Serena in mind.

The Serena Williams Design Crew apprenticeship program brought together 10 apprentices in year one, 11 in year two to create as a part of a multi-year commitment between Nike and WIlliams. Each year centers on attracting talent from a major U.S. city and the surrounding metropolitan area: New York in year one and Chicago in year two. Seven of the 10 original apprentices became full-time employees, 11 of the second unit were inducted in May 2021.

Each piece of the footwear and apparel collection celebrates Serena the athlete, style icon and champion of change. Serena’s story is woven into every detail. A timeline of her grand slams is immortalized in tape. The double zero in ‘00 Williams’ reps her daughter’s ‘OO’ initials and meaning of ‘love’ in tennis. The bold prints inspired by West African Kente cloth feature a hidden ‘S’ in the pattern. And to top it off, all pieces are tagged with Serena’s signature — her personal seal of approval.

The collection will be available on Nike.com, and at Nike stores and select retailers beginning on September 1, 2021. You can learn more about the SWDC here and read about the entire collection below.
