Aaron Rodgers and The Packers Reportedly Willing To Run It Back For One More Year

As NFL training camps are opening up around the league, the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers appear to be inching towards a resolution for this upcoming season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Rodgers and the Packers are close to an agreement that would bring Rodgers back to the team for one more season. The deal, which Schefter describes as “close,” does not include more money. However, the Packers are tweaking Rodgers’ contract in a way that would assure he can leave Green Bay next year.

Rodgers has three more years remaining on his current deal, but the Packers have agreed to void the final year in 2023. They also have assured him they will not place the franchise tag on him and will “review” his situation after the 2021 season.

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy told shareholders on Monday the organization wants him back.

“We want him back. We’re committed to him for 2021 and beyond. He’s our leader and we’re looking forward to winning another Super Bowl,” Murphy said, via ESPN.

Trading Rodgers as training camps are opening, wouldn’t give the Packers equal value in return and it wouldn’t give Rodgers enough time to get settled with a new organization. Running it back for one more year gives both sides time to assess their respective futures.
